Blizzard Entertainment has officially announced Diablo V, with the next instalment in its action RPG series scheduled for spring 2029. Revealed at BlizzCon 2026, the game will take players into a version of Sanctuary where Diablo has already won and the heroes who once defended the world are gone.
The announcement arrived during the franchise’s 30th anniversary celebrations. Although Diablo V remains early in development, Blizzard presented its first details about the setting, playable character classes, item system and the role of the player’s travelling companions.
Diablo V begins after Sanctuary has fallen
Diablo V changes the familiar starting point of the series. Players will not enter a world waiting for an invasion but one already transformed by Diablo’s rule. The Lord of Terror will be present from the beginning, influencing the story, the environment and the player’s journey.
The protagonist is the Heir to Westmarch, fleeing through the remains of a kingdom turned into an outpost of Hell. Sanctuary’s former champions are no longer there to defend it, while parts of humanity have either submitted to Diablo or been corrupted by his influence.
The world itself will change as players revisit it. Blizzard says terrain, points of interest, enemies and rewards can vary, creating a less stable version of Sanctuary shaped by the ongoing conflict. The Western Continent and the ruins of Westmarch will form an important part of this setting.
Three Diablo V classes lead the first reveal
Blizzard has confirmed the first three playable classes: Demon Hunter, Monk and Plague Knight. The returning Demon Hunter uses twin crossbows, mobility and attacks from the shadows, while the Monk combines close-range combat with holy power.
The Plague Knight is a new addition to the series. This heavily armoured class spreads disease across the battlefield and can consume it to gain power. Blizzard has not yet detailed the complete progression systems or possible character builds, and more classes will be revealed during development.
Instead of relying on established towns, players will build a travelling caravan of survivors. Its members will serve as vendors and companions while bringing their own stories to the journey. This structure connects character progression and services with a group that moves through the devastated world alongside the player.
Diablo II influences items and inventory management
The development team is drawing on Diablo II when designing Diablo V’s equipment. Its stated goal is to make items easier to understand, memorable and valuable enough to pursue across long periods of play.
Larger objects will once again occupy multiple inventory slots, while equipment sets, runes and runewords are returning. Blizzard is also experimenting with attribute requirements for individual items. These systems are still in development and may change before release.
Regular development updates begin in 2027
Diablo V is scheduled for spring 2029, but Blizzard has not announced an exact date or confirmed its platforms. The company plans to begin publishing regular development updates in 2027, giving players closer looks at systems and features as production continues.
A release window almost three years away leaves substantial room for individual mechanics to evolve. For now, the confirmed foundation is clear: Diablo V will begin after the fall of Sanctuary, introduce the Heir to Westmarch and combine new ideas with selected systems inspired by earlier games.
